BY ANDREW KING People being harassed for money has been identified as a major nuisance around malls in the nor’west area. An extensive survey conducted by the police has shown that businesses and members of the public are fed up with people rattling a cup or asking them for money. Police have launched an opera-

tion called Karapu, or North East. Sergeant Brendon Strieker said that younger female mall staff reported feeling intimidated by people harassing others for money. Bishopdale Peter Timbs Butchery manager Edward Spry said that people harassing others for money around the store is something the staff are all sick of and it was good that something would be done about it.

Sergeant Strieker heads the operation and has surveyed 360-380 businesses at Northlands, Merivale and Bishopdale, the Belfast commercial area, Redwood shops, Northwood, Mariehau, Shirley, St Albans and Edgeware. “For example one shop owner was concerned about the beggars on the streets more than burglaries, he said. “Learning where and what is happening and producing a response to

reduce crimes in those areas.â€? “We have found some different concerns from people in those areas compared to what we thought Jan Bethell, Libby Newcombe they would be concerned about,â€? Sergeant Strieker said. Beggars created unease in the community, he said. The operation has identified hotspots of crime in the area. “We have almost finished the surveying process,’’ he said. Eat whitebait from the Avon and Heathcote Rivers at your own peril - it is like eating “sewage”. Canterbury District Health Board medical officer of health Dr Alistair Humphrey said consuming whitebait caught from the city’s polluted waterways was ill-advised. Whitebaiting season starts this Saturday and runs until November 30. Dr Humphrey said whitebait in the city’s rivers is “brown bait” with the potential to cause crippling stomach bugs, like giardia cysts and

cryptosporidium “People catch it put it in a bucket and freeze it. So it is frozen in its own sewage. Cooking doesn’t make a difference,” he said. He said thawing whitebait blocks contaminated kitchens. The news comes after the release of a city council report revealed the worst waterways, strangled by contaminants from rebuild, cracked sewers and faeces from dogs and waterfowls. It is the first comprehensive report since the earthquakes, with 44 sites tested monthly last year. Among the worst sites, were

those in the north-west of the city. The Styx River Catchment was second after the Avon River Catchment for worst water quality Dudley Creek, which has suffered extensive flooding post-earthquakes was noted in the report as having the highest Escherichia-coli results along with Horseshoe Lake Discharge site. All but 11 sites failed to meet regional council guidelines for Escherichia-coli Dr Humphrey said the main source of faecal pollutants, outside of human waste from sewer overflows, were dog and

We can help those businesses trespass individuals. If they come back we are in a position to take further action.” Traiteur of Merivale owner Maarten Loeffen was surprised to see so

many police in the area. “I was amazed that there were so many around I thought something had happened but they were just conducting surveys,” he said. “We have always have had the community police in the mall and now they have got this operation going it is even better.” SAFER COMMUNITIES: Sergeant Brendon Strieker, Constable Nick Adcock and Constable Megan Robertson are part of operation Karapu that aims to put the victim first, and help the community prevent crime.

duck faeces. Feeding mallard ducks on lawns and near river ways, and failing to pick up after their dogs, meant faeces were swept into waterways. Dr Humphrey said a ban on whitebaiting would not only be appropriate for health reasons but for ecological reasons. “The Avon is a special river for whitebait because it is an incubator for the rest of Canterbury river,” he said. Eating fish from rivers, that do not have contaminated warning signs, was safe, he said. “The difference is you wash them, gut them, fillet them, and cook them,” he said

Burglars target businesses in Merivale, Edgeware BY ANDREW KING Burglars are targeting businesses in Merivale and Edgeware. In one of the break-ins, offenders accessed the Merivale Mall throught the roof. Merivale Mall centre manager Nicola Dolan said the burglars made away with only a “handful of change”. Traiteur of Merivale, near the mall, also had an attempted break-in on the same night. The would-be burglars went away empty-handed. Police said they were unsure if the two burglaries were connected. Traiteur owner Maarten Loeffen (right) said a piece of steel appeared to be used to pry open the door. He arrived at work that morning to see the door ajar by 30cm. “They forced the door open but then the alarm went off and they must have been scared and ran away,” he said. Karamella Hairdressing on Cranford St, was broken into two weeks ago, also in the early hours of the morning. Sergeant Brendon Strieker

The toilets and WiFi will be unavailable throughout the entire period of the closure. Customers won’t be able to return items to the library throughout the closure, but items can be returned to any in the Christchurch City Libraries network. The nearest library is Fendalton Library on the corner of Clyde and Jeffreys Rds.

Northern Loop Project

Orion has reduced Gardiners Rd to one lane until September while it works on its new Northern Loop Project. The $45m project adds electrical capacity to northern Christchurch and additional resilience to the city’s power network. The project includes construction of a new substation near Johns and Sawyers Arms Rds, and installation of 22km of underground high voltage cable that links the new substation to Orion’s existing substations at Papanui and Rawhiti Domain in New Brighton.

He said they could not yet comment on whether they were actually attempted break-ins

or just vandals running around damaging property - something that Merivale and the surrounding areas had been victim of in past weeks. Ms Dolan was confident in the ability of the police to catch the people who had broke in for the tiny reward. “It is currently in the hands of the police and while I am disap-

pointed it happened, I trust that the culprits will soon be identified and caught.” “We won’t know until we look into these cases and speak with the owners of the property. “One of the good things about Merivale is that it is well-lit and has CCTV that we can use,” Sergeant Strieker said.

Neighbourhood Week is coming around for another year with applications for funding available now. The annual event held in October and November is aimed at bringing people together. Leading fellow young delegates Middleton Grange’s Evangeline Maffey has been selected to head the United Nations New Zealand Youth Delegation to The Hague next year, and is nervous about her big speech in front of 4000 people. Andrew King speaks to her REPRESENTING: Evangeline Maffey at a mock UN meeting where she represented the United Kingdom. Next year she will head the New Zealand delegation to The Hague.

Hi Eva, so what made you get into the UN Youth? I got involved in United Nations Youth New Zealand in Year 11, because of a suggestion from my history teacher at the time. I was told that it was a good opportunity and it was. I have been involved since then. How long have you been in it? I have been in it for three years. You were recently elected to head the New Zealand delegation to The Hague in Holland, what does that mean to you? I had to apply for it and go through an interview process. After 20 names had been called I

Watch & Clock

was preparing myself to put on a brave face, but to my absolute surprise, my name was the last one on the list as head delegate of the trip. I am the one who makes the speeches to all the people we visit. I’m basically the face of the New Zealand delegation. I have to make the opening speech to around 4000 students which is pretty nerve-racking. What do you want to bring to the table on the world stage? New Zealand already has a good name at the conference. We have a high calibre of students that have gone and are going to conferences like this. Being the head, I want to make sure everyone feels included and make the strongest team possible. I want us to look out for each other.

What does the UNYNZ do for regions like Canterbury? We are run by Canterbury University. They run events that simulate the workings of the United Nations, along with workshops and events that allow youth to interact with diplomats and other notable dignitaries. What is best thing about the UN? I think that UNYNZ gives you a good career path. I took a university course on the European Union because I am totally interested in it. Most people that do these events want to work with the UN at some point. It really encourages you to get involved in international issues. Where do you see it taking you? Next year I plan to study international relations, anthropology and law at Canterbury University. I owe it to UNYNZ giving me that drive and career direction. Then somewhere in the future I may work in a non-governmental occupation or a non-profit organisation. What are some of the goals of the UN Youth? The main goals are to give young people a place to voice their views and allow their opinions to be heard. It allows the youth of New Zealand to show what they want. We want to get a wide range of people involved to show the world that young people have something to contribute too.

to The Hague Do you take many trips for the UNYNZ? They have a few international ones throughout the Pacific and Australia. But the one in The Hague next year is the biggest for our age. We will be heading to New York, Paris, Rome, Berlin, Geneva, Amsterdam and of course The Hague where the conference will be held. Is the UN something you saw yourself getting into? I thought I was going to be a teacher. I think I was keen on the primary school age but I didn’t really know once I got involved in the UN Youth, it just swept me up. At what age are you too old to be in the UNYNZ? I think it is for people up to the age of 25. It’s run by Canterbury University students who volunteer their time to help out and run it. You can be heavily involved after high school. Who do you look up to at the UN? I would have to say Ban Kimoon. He has made himself a real figure in the UN or Helen Clark obviously. It is great to see a female leader and it is good for New Zealand. How do others get involved? We have a website that has heaps of info on it. All the events are on it. All the email addresses of the regional presidents are on that page as well so you can talk with them about getting involved. We have a Facebook page which will keep you updated. Getting involved at school is how I got into it.

O’Sheas safe found in backyard BY KYLE KNOWLES ASPIRING LEADERS: The United Nation’s Youth New Zealand led by Evangeline Maffey (front left), will head away to The Hague next year. Why should they get involved? For me it’s mainly about personal development, building great skills and it gives you a different perspective. It raises your awareness of global issues. I think it is really worthwhile to get involved with these things. It leads to heaps of other avenues. It really opens doors for youth. What do your friends think of you being in it? They are pretty excited, my school was stoked for me to get this opportunity. We are trying to encourage that awareness and get more people involved in it. It’s been a real honour to get selected. What do you do for fun?

I really enjoy organising events and getting involved in school projects. I really like making environments where people can have fun. I love reading. I am really getting into Jane Austen at the moment, Pride and Prejudice is my favourite. Were you born in Christchurch? I was born in the small town of Hororata, we moved to Christchurch when I was about two-anda-half. Now I live in Cashmere. We have been there for about 15 years. • You can help Eva raise money for her trip by visiting wwwgivealittle.co.nz/cause/ eva4thimun

A safe which was stolen from O’Sheas Public House in May has been found in a backyard. About $1500 was in the safe when it was taken by two men who used a crowbar to break into the back door of the bar. It was found by police at a Shirley house, close to O’Sheas. The cash which was in it was gone and the safe was badly damaged. One person was arrested at the address after police obtained a search warrant. Bar owner Alan Stroud said the man arrested was not one of the two which broke into the bar. Cheques from the safe were found at the address along with the safe itself.

Mr Stroud said police found more cheques at a Beckenham address which lead police to the Shirley property where the safe was found. The money belonged to O’Sheas social committee which had stored it in the safe behind the bar. Mr Stroud put up a $100 bar tab for any information leading to the return of the safe. The bar tab was never claimed. Mr Stroud said the men who stole the safe would have known there was money in it, and suspected they had been at the bar previously and saw money going into it. The intruders did not trip the alarm until they were leaving with the safe in hand.

Jan Chaffey was born in the ‘south of the South Island’. She grew up with a great love of wild places and native plants. She is a dedicated environmentalist with a background in fine arts and botany.Jan graduated from the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts in the 1950s and became a set designer with New Zealand Players Theatre Trust in Wellington. Here she enjoyed the opportunity to work in mixed media on a large scale, something she is again realizing, as she moves to her biggest canvases to date, in ‘Exilio’ debuting at Little River Gallery. Exilio is an exploration and celebration of New Zealand’s eight native kowhai. The series brings together a number of her interests – calligraphy, the painted narrative, abstract expressionism, and botany. Working in goache on paper and oil on canvas, Jan’s latest series is bold and contemporary. Her painterly style is gestural and spontaneous and owes something to William de Kooning and Mark Tobey. Her real message, however, is about the fragility of our native flora and fauna and the importance of its preservation. She calls New Zealand ‘our inherited environment’ - something to be respected and treasured. Her paintings are a forum for raising awareness about the beauty and vulnerability of nature. Through the medium of painting, using visual essays, Jan has helped to increase awareness about the beauty and fragility of New Zealand’s flora and fauna. Her passion for each is evident in every painting. Always an animated painter, Jan’s work has become increasingly free. She strives to rise above merely detailing the scientific specimen, to capture the essence of her botanical subject matter. And yet, every brushstroke represents discipline and restraint. Jan’s workbooks reveal her process is lengthy, considered, deliberate and measured. In this series of kowhai paintings, the versatility and richness of this hardy native is evoked in liberal brushstrokes and rich colour. In both oil and goache, on small and large scale, the character of this quintessential native is realized anew. Jan has been exhibiting throughout the South Island for over 30 years. Her representative galleries have included Salamander and CoCA. This is her first show at Little River Gallery. Over the past 25 years she has created a native plant collection at home. She has also initiated the replanting of a reserve area on the hills behind Tai Tapu, using locally collected seeds. It is part of her commitment to raising awareness within the local community about the importance of protecting our flora and fauna. Jan Chaffey

Sir Peter Blake young achievers

Selwyn House’s young leader of the future BY ANDREW KING

Leadership has a new face at Selwyn House School. Ella Stephens, 13, is recipient of the school’s Sir Peter Blake Young Leader Award. The school sets the criteria for what is needed to receive the award. It encourages all year 8 students to apply as part of their leadership academy. Students write a letter of application then the school decides who to give the prestigious award to. Team leader of year 7 and 8 Greg Pierce said it was great to read the letters the students had written. “It’s a good chance for them to reflect about what they have achieved out in the community and at school with the younger girls,” he said. “Ella just has the most lovely nature, generous with her time, honest and participates across everything including sports and music. “She is a genuine all rounder and has a bit of steely determination, that’s why she was chosen to receive this award.”

INSPIRATION: Marian College year 12 students attended the Sir Peter Blake Trust Emerging Leaders’ Conference to see just what they could achieve if they put their minds to it.

Marian students get inspiration

FUTURE LEADER: Ella Stephens is this year’s recipient of the Sir Peter Blake Young Leader Award at Selwyn House School. Selwyn House put all their year 8 girls through a leadership academy that helps them develop the skills they need to become influential women in society. “We believe leaders are made not born,” Mr Pierce said. “We are developing leadership skills in all the girls with a focus on the five building blocks – finding a voice, participation, collaboration, organisation, making a difference.

“Ella has a good spread over those areas.” Mr Pierce said when it was announced in an assembly she was the recipient, she was shocked. “She was very excited. Very surprised and very humble just a couple of the good traits she has.” Sir Peter Blake was one of New Zealand’s finest yachtsmen and was knighted in 1995. He was tragically killed in 2001 by pirates on the Amazon River.

Finding the courage to lead is a tough thing to do. For a group of Marian College year 12 students the opportunity to hear the inspirational life stories from a variety of high achievers has motivated them to continue to serve their local communities. The Sir Peter Blake Trust Emerging Leaders’ Conference, hosted by Christ’s College, had student leaders from throughout the city together listening to what was possible when there was a dedication to achieve. “The keynote speaker Alex Reese was amazing to listen to,” Marian student Hannah Everingham said.

“He is only 23, but has already set up a foundation to help children living in poverty in India and Sri Lanka. He inspired us to realise that even though we’re young, we can still contribute and be leaders.” As part of the conference, students were given the opportunity to speak about community service that their colleges had undertaken. Cotswold’s little planters help out at wetland

SINGING TO PLANTS: Annabelle Sincock, 9, and Porsche Kite, 10, sang happy birthday to each plant to help them grow. Cotswold Primary School have shown their green thumbs and singing skills by helping out with the Travis Wetland tree planting. The Enviro Team from the school joined other community volunteer groups to plant trees. The Travis Wetland has a group of people overlooking its restoration, including the Avon-Otakaro community group and the Department of Conservation. MUCKING IN: Ailsa Bianco and Ethan Spanjer get their hands dirty helping to replant the wetlands.

12 Week Challenge The end of winter is the traditional time to kick-start a health and fitness regime ready for the summer and the members and staff at Fitness Canterbury have developed a programme that takes it a step further. Their traditional 12 Week Challenge has always had two categories designed to meet the specific goals of participants. The always popular Shape Change Challenge is designed to get you looking great and ready to hit the beach. It’s the start of a fitter, healthier you and includes a personal trainer session where you set goals, receive an individual programme and take your starting measurements and “before” photos which will show you just how far you’ve come 12 weeks later. The aim is to become as lean as possible, dropping fat and gaining muscle at the same time as gaining improved all round fitness. For new members there is a training diary, 24 hour gym access at Fitness Canterbury and great prizes based on the before and after photos. The real goal, however, is to get you in the best shape of your life. Fitness Canterbury owners Kent Gibson and Scott Mazey know that this is a programme that works, but having listened to members who have gone through the 12 Week Challenge in previous years, both Scott, Kent and their team of Personal trainers have redeveloped the second category and are ready to launch the Better Life Challenge. This Challenge is designed to make you feel great by improving

9

your cardio-vascular fitness, increase strength, agility and body composition, and give you the energy and drive to face everyday life. It is believed that it takes 21 days to develop a new habit, and the nutritional information, motivation techniques and the exercise routine that you gain from the Better Life Challenge will be part of your life, long after the 12 weeks are completed. You receive several individual sessions throughout. There are two 20 minute meetings with Chris Weddell, their measurement specialist giving you an in-depth understanding of your body’s fat percentage, weight and range of motion at the start and end of the Challenge. Two one-hour sessions with your qualified personal trainer give you customised workouts and track your progress. Throughout, a private Facebook forum helps you keep in touch with other participants and the Fitness Canterbury Team. They know how tough a challenge like this can be and their goal is to help you reach yours. There are weekly newsletters with heaps of tips and information and, like the Shape Change Challenge, there are great prizes based on how far participants have come from their original baselines. All results are confidential and the Challenges are about you and your individual goals. Visit www.fitnesscanterbury.co.nz or ring 03 358 9667.

Cricket and football clubs that use Burnside Park have had a gutsful with vandals ripping up their grounds. Burnside West Canterbury University Cricket chairman Paul O’Flaherty and chief executive of FC2011 Eddie Cropley have approached the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board for a solution. On the Memorial Ave side of the park there is a gap in the trees where vandals can drive their cars through then rip up the football fields and cricket blocks. They want funding to build a barrier that would prevent cars from getting into the park to hopefully stop the vandalism. “Council staff have been good and the community board were sympathetic,” he said. “They want to get it sorted and get a fence in sooner rather than later.” Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board deputy chairman David Cartwright said it was a bit of a no-brainer. “Council staff are looking at weeks, not months, to get the work done subject to contractor,” he said. “It will be done as soon as it possibly can.” Mr O’Flaherty said they spend about $20,000 a year on their

cricket blocks and when they are damaged it takes a lot of hard work to get them back up to a playable level. “Last time there was about $1300 damage done to the cricket blocks,” he said. “We managed to sort it just in time for the cricket season this year, but it was touch and go for a little bit.” Mr Cropley said it was a real shame to turn up for a game on Saturday and find the damage. “We can’t play on the grounds for health and safety reasons,” he said. “There are big ruts in the field so we have to move games and trainings.” He said moving training is not too bad but when it is done on a Friday night before a game the next morning, it really starts to frustrate those who just want to play sport. “It costs us, and the council, a lot of money,” Mr Cropley said. “We have to relocate games and have had to cancel trainings, fortunately we haven’t had to cancel games. “When we have discovered vandalism we have sent the police photos of the damage,” he said Mr O’Flaherty has also sent photos of the damage to the police and said that it was mainly for insurance purposes.

NOT CRICKET: Some of the damage vandals in cars have created at Burnside Park.

Silver medal for basketballers Allenvale School student Bradley Garner was part of the New Zealand Special Olympics basketball team which won silver at the World Summer Games. They finished in the silver medal position in division two, which was held in Los Angeles. Garner, 20, was the top points scorer in every match the New Zealand side played. The division two ranking is the highest grading of any of the five New Zealand teams that have participated in the World Games since 1991. In the division two gold medal match against the United Arab Emirates, New Zealand went down 29-15. The team was coached by inaugural Canterbury Rams player, Al Robson, who also coached the New Zealand 2011 team at Athens to a division three silver medal. Robson said the side had their chances in the final but things didn’t quite go their way against the bigger more experienced UAE team. That left the side in sixth overall. At the medal ceremony, much to the New Zealand team’s surprise they were also presented with the trophy for outstanding sportsmanship. This was the first time it has

They voted for the team that demonstrated the true values of Special Olympics as well as being friendly, respectful, showing sportsmanship and out of the 75 basketball teams the Kiwis were voted number one. The team qualified for division two after a series of six, short, 9min grading games winning four of the six. They played Saudi Arabia, Trinidad and Tobago, Hungary, Great Britain, Indonesia and Italy, with quite a mix of playing styles. In their first pool game after

the grading games New Zealand came up against Trinidad and Tobago again. The side came from behind to win 23-17 with Garner playing a leading role. Robson said it was a really tight game. “They jumped out to a lead with their big man dominating the game at both ends while we were making mistakes. “Eventually we settled down

and played some great defence. Bradley played a great game and made plenty of free throws drawing fouls on their big danger man.” The second pool game was a Kiwi whitewashing of Nippon Japan 58-15. In the final pool game New Zealand lost to UAE 28-14 but still came home with medals around their necks.

Friendly team makes

denture fitting

trouble-free

F

or anyone having to get dentures fitted, it can seem a daunting prospect, and it’s natural to feel apprehensive about what lies ahead. However, if you are in that situation, you will be put at your ease and the whole process will be made as smooth and troublefree as possible when you have the work done by the friendly, experienced team at Denture South. Clinical technician Andrew Johnson, who has owned and operated the business for 12 and a half years, has a team of professionals, including clinical and lab technicians, who provide a full range of denture services. These include first-time immediate dentures, full replacement dentures, partial plates and sports mouthguards. Most clients are referred to Denture South by their dentist, Andrew says, and the technicians and dentist work as a team, ensuring their clients, particularly those having first-time dentures, are made to feel comfortable. “There’s a lot of planning required, so when we first meet the client we explain

the procedures and what they can expect. Then after the dentures have been fitted, we take extra care to make sure they are coping well,” Andrew says. “We help them transition through the initial stages of having their new dentures. Then we follow up with them a week after the fitting, and it’s ongoing from there over the next six months. That follow-through is very important.” There are two Denture South clinics catering for residents across the southern and western suburbs of Christchurch, one in Barrington St, and the other in Brynley St, Hornby. Both clinics have offstreet parking. Many Denture South clients come through word-of-mouth referral, an indication of the level of satisfaction that’s provided there. Friendly, approachable and highly skilled, the Denture South team enjoys offering that service, and helping people who need to have new dentures fitted feel as comfortable and confident as possible throughout the procedure and go on to manage their new teeth with ease.

Years 1 to 10 at Aidanfield Christian School

A

idanfield Christian School is a Year 1 to 10 school which continues to grow strongly, becoming well established in the Halswell area. We enjoy spacious grounds, modern classrooms and being actively involved in supporting the wider Halswell community. Principal Mark Richardson says that the roll has continued to grow and we are likely to finish this year with a very healthy figure of over 250 students. As a very diverse cultural and denominational group, we learn from and support each other through the learning journey. Innovative programmes are in place to best support our student learners in areas of academic achievement, character development and looking at exploring authentic purposes for each pupil. We have some parents who are non–church attending,

all levels, with the students participating in a wide range of fitness and skill-based learning activities and an award-winning sports programme. Students have opportunities for education outside the classroom with camps and cultural exchanges. Students work with specialist technology teachers in learning design processes in wood, electronics, fabric and food. There are opportunities to learn musical instruments, join the junior choir and participate in drama events. The school values are an integral part of the learning programmes helping students to develop the skills and attitudes needed for personal and academic success. The middle years of schooling are important stages of learning in which students can discover their strengths and interests in subjects which will lead them to qualifications and career choices.

athedral Grammar, where the best of 135 years of teaching experience goes hand-in-hand with the best of new and proven educative thinking – because only the best is good enough for your child! Our classrooms have walls; our pupils have desks; our maths curriculum is a real foundation for life, not a failing numeracy project; and our literature programme is rich in the greatest children’s books – the best of the old and the new. Alongside this, we have specialist science and art, wide-ranging history and geography reinforced by a comprehensive calendar of outdoor education and a worldclass music programme taught by some of the top musicians in the city. From wearable arts to robotics to sport, whether taking to the stage or taking to the mountains, Grammar is always abuzz. But don’t just take our word for it. Chris started in February. “I like being at Grammar. Everyone has been so friendly and welcoming.” Chris’s mother Sharon adds, “As parents, we couldn’t be happier with

Cathedral Grammar as the choice for our son in Year 7. He has fitted right in; is nurtured, challenged and exceeding his own expectations.” Dion and Vivien only joined Grammar in Term 3. When asked to give his first day a mark out of 10, Dion replied instantly: ‘452!’ Vivien feels her “education is better and I am far more challenged”. Susan emailed after her daughter spent three terms in Year 4 when the family had to move to Christchurch unexpectedly. “To know Briar was enrolled in such an amazing school, where she was looked after, well-educated and accepted, took away a huge amount of stress! The education she received has been life-changing for her. She has become a much more motivated student and also a more moral citizen. She has been exposed to a much higher level of education and opportunity than I would have ever thought possible.” To long-standing parent Reetah, “It’s of huge importance that Bruno and Milly view Grammar as their Turangawaewae – their place to stand, their place to speak and be

heard, their place of belonging. They feel this is because the staff has supported and facilitated their learning, validated their opinions and made Grammar a place where they feel safe to express who they are. For that, the staff has my greatest respect and gratitude.” If this is a perspective you’d like for your child, we’d love to meet you at Open Day on Tuesday, August 18. Alternatively, registrar Linda Marsh can arrange your tour to suit. Phone (03) 365.0385.

We have specialist science and art, wideranging history and geography reinforced by a comprehensive calendar of outdoor education and a world-class music programme taught by some of the top musicians in the city.

Tamariki School’s unique philosophy

W

e are different in many ways from other schools, as we focus on supporting each child to learn the strategies of life and to grow in all areas - emotionally, socially, cognitively and more. We provide a meaningful education, and this is evidenced by the fact that past students send their own children to Tamariki. Tamariki School was founded in 1967 by a group of people interested in providing an environment that would support primaryaged children to develop the awareness and abilities needed to positively impact their own lives. The founders were influenced by the Playcentre movement, the teachings of Dr M BevanBrown, a local psychiatrist, and the experiences and writing of the educator A S Neill (founder of Summerhill School, UK). A key principle at

Tamariki is that play enables children to deepen understanding about their world, themselves and others in a relaxed way. Another principle is community awareness, and frequent whole school meetings are used to discuss ideas and to reflect on how one person affects another. We proudly use the Maori name that has been gifted to us, as we truly are a child-focused school and we welcome children of all cultural backgrounds.

Merrin School St Bernadette - a hidden gem Become a

W

hen the Merrin School students came back to Term 3, they also came back to a new learning environment. Over the last holiday break several classrooms were altered to remove walls to make our learning environment bigger and better. Merrin School now has open plan classrooms with the latest shaped tables and bean bags in recognition of the different learning styles that students prefer. This open plan environment allows the students to flow between our classes with our self regulated learning. We are one of a growing number of schools adopting this change in the new learning style. We have BYOD (bring your own device) that runs from Year Four through to Year Eight. This allows the students to do their research online without having to wait for free devices, and enables students to access online learning sites that they use at their own learning level instead of at a general class level.

S

t Bernadette’s Catholic School is a hidden gem in Hornby. A place where children thrive in a values-based learning environment. Children are supported to achieve their full potential and to experience success in a variety of situations. The school provides children with a wide range of academic, sporting, cultural and leadership opportunities. The Special Catholic Character is woven through all areas of school life and is strengthened by a positive relationship with the parish. There are four values that also support the special character: compassion, excellence, responsibility and respect. A dedicated staff provide learning

programmes to meet the needs of all students as they become confident, connected and actively involved lifelong learners. The staff would be delighted to show you around the school and answer any questions that you or your child may have.

Kirkwood Intermediate School of Choice

K

irkwood is a state, coeducational intermediate school. Everything we do, everything we have and all of our plans for the future are designed for children aged 10 to13 years old. These children are going through a real growth spurt – intellectually, emotionally and physically. The staff at Kirkwood are specialists with these Year 7 and 8 children, and recognise the very special attributes and challenges of this age group. Kirkwood is an inclusive school with mixed ability classes and programmes to extend and enrich our children. We are also a very well-resourced school. We have eight

specialist technology rooms, a dedicated art room, spacious grounds, a modern challenge course and hard court areas for netball, basketball and other games. Our teaching resources are modern, our computer network is up-to-date and highly specified, and our classrooms are safe and vibrant places for children to work and learn. Kirkwood is a very special school. Our children choose to come here. The children and their parents see something about our school that appeals to them, and I believe our reputation is second to none. Year 7-8 at Oaklands School

O

aklands School is a decile 9, full primary school in Halswell. As students move into Year 7-8, we aim to help them become more resourceful, learn to communicate in a wide variety of ways and develop a sense of shared ownership in the life of the school. They are encouraged to become independent learners who have the necessary skills to take on leadership roles within the school and in the wider community. Research shows that if students feel a strong sense of belonging, they will have greater motivation and purpose in their daily engagement with staff and fellow students. They also learn to identify how they might contribute to the good of the community. The focus for the Year 7 and 8s is on consolidating skills in literacy and numeracy along with encouraging students to develop the key competencies through our values programme. These are the skills they will need to be successful, lifelong learners. In addition to these core areas, the Year 7-8 programme also covers Physical Education & Health, the Arts, Languages, Integrated Studies (Science, Social Studies, Technology), Careers and Te Reo Maori. They also participate in an annual leadership conference, fundraising activities towards the Year 8 Wellington camp, and in sports our Year 7-8s also participate in the Koru Games. This is proving to be very popular, giving many students an opportunity to shine. It is bringing out a wide range of talents and abilities. The categories are: Solo and Group singing, dance, instrumental and ‘entertainment’. The school has a senior rock band who had the wonderful opportunity to work for two days with Hera, a professional singer/ songwriter. With her, they produced four amazing original songs. SNBS was also lucky enough to have Stan Walker (recording artist, winner of Australian Idol and judge of the The X Factor NZ) visit them after a student

had won an opportunity to attend the Under 20 FIFA World Cup with him in his role as Youth Ambassador. Stan had the students very excited and singing along with him. Both these fabulous opportunities motivated students to ‘have a go’ for an audition. With the talents on display, there will be

no shortage for future rock band members. Following the earthquakes, the school doesn’t have a hall to use so finalists will have the opportunity to perform in front of the school in their outdoor Whanauhui, and they are sure some parents will be very surprised! South New Brighton School’s certainly got talent.

A CLUB BY THE SEA!

Hailing from Dunedin,

Valley Bluegrass say they are the southernmost bluegrass band in the world. This may actually be true! Bluegrass Music can be described as an infectious high energy blend of old time country, blues, ragtime, Celtic with a dash of rock n roll. These guys, with their traditional line-up of banjo, fiddle, mandolin, dobro (guitar), and bass fiddle (upright bass), master it perfectly. Since forming in 2013, Valley Bluegrass has been in hot demand playing festivals and featured concerts. And in keeping with the spirit of the music, they busk regularly at the Otago Farmer's Market - delighting customers and stall holders with their upbeat tunes and songs. Catch them on their mini-tour around Christchurch this weekend - Friday 14th August, 7pm at Pomeroy's Old Brewery Inn on Kilmore St; Saturday 15th August, 8pm at Gustav's in the Woolston Tannery; and at the Christchurch Folk Club in the Irish Society Hall, 29 Domain Tce, Spreydon on Sunday 16th August, 7.30pm.
